Ammunition production began in Pottsville back in 1795 when William Brown started a small arm shop on Main Street. At that time, there were only five gunsmiths in Pennsylvania and Brown was one of them. He manufactured firearms using muzzle-loading powder and shot which he shipped all over the state. Over time, other businesses followed suit and soon there were several small arms shops operating throughout the state. The first major Ammunition Manufacturing Company was founded in 1820 by John Haysstall and Samuel Morse who called themselves The Hartford Armory Company. This company produced muskets, cannons, revolvers and pistols under their own name as well as selling ammo to other businesses across Pennsylvania. Over time these companies evolved into something much larger with branches located all over the state (and even abroad). By 1847 there were 10 arsenals statewide employing over 60 workers producing firearms including breechloading guns such as rifles and shotguns; rifled barrels for artillery; tools; raw materials; marketing services; insurance; shipping escorts; public relations & advertising work... In 1853, a new 5th Regiment of Artillery was organized in Pottsville and served in the Indian Wars (1856-60). It disbanded on November 30, 1860. In 1865 a 6th Regiment of Artillery was organized in Pottsville and served with distinction during the American Civil War (1861-65). It disbanded on April 14, 1865. The 7th Cavalry Infantry regiment was formed at Pottsville on December 12, 1861 from parts of two other artillery regiments that had been disbanded earlier that year; it participated in the Confederate Invasion of Maryland that March and fought until April 9 when it withdrew to Virginia. On May 10 it relieved an infantry brigade under General Robert Ewell at Salisbury Court House after rebel cavalry charged British troops there without warning or provocation. Afterward five companies were detached to duty guarding installations along the James River near Washington D.C., four Companies serving around Petersburg while one Company patrolled through North Carolina en route to Richmond where they arrived on July 29.]]

Pottsville was founded by George Washington in 1755 as a small trading post on the Delaware River. In 1815, Pottsville was made the seat of Butler County after its creation from part of Huntingdon County. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century due to its importance as a transportation and industrial center for eastern Pennsylvania and southern Maryland. Pottsville is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Pottsville is part of the Lancaster Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first potters in Pottsville were Abraham and Jacob Potter who started operations in 1764. Abram and his son Solomon opened a pottery on Fourth Street. By 1800, there were three potteries in Pottsville: one by Solomon Potter and two by Abraham Potter. In 1827, John Fenton moved to Pottsville from Lebanon and began making wine barrels for local wineries. In 1832, James Pritchard arrived from Ohio and set up shop as a grocer/butcher in Pottsville. He became known for his innovative methods of handling meat products such as curing them with salt then smoking them until they were perfectly cooked—a process called “puddingizing” which gave the product its characteristic taste and texture). In 1892, Jno Cramer moved to Pottsville from Amish country with his family to open a grocery store that became well-known throughout the area for its unique concepts such as cranberry jelly (made with cranberries gathered during the winter), apple pie (which was unusual because it was made without butter or flour), and ice cream cones (an innovation that remained popular into the 20th century). On October 15, 1861, during American Civil War efforts to secure food supplies for soldiers on the frontlines near Lancaster City Limits,[1] 11 farmers including six men from Pottsville raised over $2 worth of cornmeal at an auction on Ulysses S. Grant's farm north of town towards Gettysburg.[2][3] The cornmeal used fresh cornstarch instead ofEnhanced Flour which had been available since before America's war effort began; this action helped improve morale among Union troops dealing with shortages caused byvious factors such as rainouts while fighting off Confederate attacks along their lines of supply routes[4][5]
