One of the earliest scopes to be produced in Pottsville, Pennsylvania became known as the "Pottsville Telescope." This instrument was designed by Solomon Swartz and manufactured by him and his son-in-law, Jacob Israel. The telescope was first used to view stars at night. It was later sold to Dr. John James Audubon who used it to observe birds from a distance. The Swartz Telescope is now preserved in the Audubon Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. The Swartz Telescope is one of only three complete telescopes ever made in America. The other two are the largest telescopes ever built: the Keck Observatory's Palomar Observatory Schmidt telescope and Mount Wilson's Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA). The first use of an electronic scope with a digital display occurred on October 1, 1960 when George Mueller Predator using an electronic scope placed on top of a camera at University Park observatory located in Philadelphia, PA viewed objects up to 100 miles away using an electronic sky chart developed by Muller and his team at Penn State University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

Pottsville is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,010 at the 2010 census. Pottsville is located on the southern edge of Berks County and is part of the Reading Borough. It lies west-southwest of Philadelphia and east of Allentown. The first settler in Pottsville was John Potts who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on what is today's Main Street. In 1812, James Forbes purchased land from John Potts to form the village of Forbes which became Pottsville after Forbes bought out his brother-in-law. In 1824, Benjamin Franklin Schuette founded a school in Pottsville which was renamed "Schuette Academy" in 1827 after him. In 1828, he donated land for an ecclesiastical cemetery and also laid out streets for the village which were later renamed Main Street and Second Street. In 1830, Abraham Woodrow married Sarah Stanton from New York City and moved to Pottsville with her where they tavern started servingwine as early as 1830 under license from Colonel Samuel Chase (1786–1847), one of the founders of Philadelphia's University Park estate (now University City). The earliest deed mention wine being served at Schuette Tavern dated back to 1830 when it was licensed by Colonel Samuel Chase himself! After purchasing much more property over time - including three blocks near present day Fourth Street - Isaac Asbury erected his large brick mansion on this site in 1865 following his purchase of Ridgefield Township adjacent to what would become pottersvillegallery/pottersvillette/pottersvilley () now known as Asbury Park ( ). At its peak during prohibition era circa 1920-1930 it had up to 350 guests nightly inside its walls! “Potsdam born; new England raised; Williamstown born: these were my parents – two such types might not have chosen quite so different destinies but that’s life." The early days were hard: there were no schools or doctors hereabouts except for one homeopathic doctor who did some work for Mr & Mrs Pugh (a Quaker couple) until he got sickly… So hard that some folks went off into other parts round about us ‘cause they couldn’t stand it any longer living without help from us proper people – blacksmiths & machiners etcetera...But wiry Amos Ransom made us all laugh by coming up with a plan whereby we could get around without those particular friends too—he knew just how to hold our own against those rough characters anywhere near town… By 1880 there must have been close to 300 people living hereabouts... But things changed dramatically when water began showing up along Third & Fourth Streets right outside our door – quickly becoming an essential factor both trade & social intercourse within our community took off like never before! And so began not only a rich history but also many memories that still make everyone smile long after they hear them spoken about again... For example : I recall one particularly hot summer day in 1934 when we all gathered around the fire enjoying good old country music while sitting around OUR Fireplace watchingladen hawks fly overhead…As we sat there smoking cigars I looked up & saw 3 or 4 Bald Eagle flying across busy Main Street towards Independence Hall just BELOW whereupon INSTANTLY ONE OF THEM STOPPED RIGHT IN ITS FLIGHT ABOUT 25 FEET ABOVE THEGround!! Just LIKE THAT ALL OF US KNEW THAT WE WERE SAFE FROM NOW ON!!"
