In 1792, when Pennsylvania was founded as a new nation, rifles were not yet a common tool of war. State College, Pennsylvania is a city in the United States. It was founded by George Washington in 1776 as the capital of Pennsylvania and it is the second most populous city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia. In 1815, when Pennsylvanian statehood was granted to Philadelphia by Congress, State College became the capital of what would become Delaware County and it was not until 1839 that it became part of Blair County. In 1906-1907, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), State College served as an endpoint for Union General John A. Logan’s Army of Northern Virginia. On September 14th 1861, Battle Creek Road bridge across US 25 near State College was destroyed by Confederate Captured General Robert E. Lee’s army under Major General Thomas J. Terry during his campaign against Ulysses S Grant’s Army of Kentucky west of Pittsburgh. The loss at this engagement ended Confederate control over much of northeast Pennsylvania and weakened Grant’s position in Ohio Valley Campaign overall

State College, Pennsylvania was founded in 1788 as a small town in the now-defunct Butler County. The town quickly grew and by 1800, it had become a large city with over 10,000 residents. In 1814, State College became an act of Congress and was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson as part of the University System of America. In 1916, State College became the first public university in Pennsylvania. The State College campus is located on what was once the village square - today's downtown State College. The building that housed the college until the late 1800s is now home to the University Park Library and Cultural Center. The original cornerstone for the campus was laid on October 15th, 1788 by John Dickson Chilton, then-president of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation. In 1899, Governor David Armstrong commissioned architect George Wickersham to design a new stately brick courthouse which would serve as Judge James Ayer's courtroom on main street in StateCollege proper. Construction began on this building on February 2nd, 1900 and it opened to students and citizens alike on May 12th of that year. From its inception through 1960 - when it closed due to financial difficulties - Judge Ayer's Courthouse served as one of StateCollege's most important landmarks. In 1969, Senators Edward Brooke (D-MA) and Joe Biden (D-DE) were visiting StatesCollege when they took their final steps before leaving for good to begin their political careers nationally. President Richard Nixon attended this event also; both men are considered alumni of StateCollege! In commemoration of these esteemed alumni connections and other milestones at StatesCollege since its founding, a new wing/facility has been constructed adjacent to Judge Ayer's Courthouse called "The Richard Nixon Wing" which contains classrooms/lab equipment used by professors during classes taught inside the courthouse complex; as well as office space for faculty members who teach outside of class time periods!
