The popularity of pistols led to their inclusion on the U.S. Treasury Department's list of banned items in 1897. Although handguns continue to be produced in Uniontown, they are no longer considered legal firearm devices under state or federal law. There are two main attractions in Uniontown: The Susquehanna Museum and Gardens (opened in 1967) and the Ohio-built Union Canal (1825). The museum has interactive exhibits about life in early America; access to artifacts from many local businesses; an 8-acre (.30-km²) botanical garden with over 100 species of plants and trees; a Federalist clubhouse from 1820; a reconstructed jail from 1829; and a replica of an Erie Canal boat model built between 1907 and 1915. The canal has also been used for water skiing, boating, fishing, swimming, windsurfing, skating/boarding/walking etc., since it opened in 1925. There are now six miles (10 km) of interpretive trails around the canal towpaths including one that goes all the way around the bend near Hazleton
