Bullets in Uniontown, Pennsylvania date back to the Revolutionary War. In 1778, Captain Daniel Forde of the 3rd Regiment of light Artillery shot an apple off a tree near what is now Main Street in Uniontown and was awarded a silver shilling for his feat. Another apple shooting event took place in 1781 when Colonel James Callender of the 10th Regiment of Light Infantry shot an apple off a tree at the corner of West Main and Peach Streets in Uniontown. In 1812, Lieutenant George Stephenson fired three rounds from a cannonball at a peach orchard on High Street in Uniontown, hitting two trees and causing damage to one. A large peach orchard was located on Court House Road north of present-day University Drive between Main and Peach Streets. The orchard was destroyed by fire in 1814 and no records exist showing who caused that particular fire. In 1865, Captain John Dickey of Company K (4th Regiment) 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry used his revolver to shoot an apple off a tree near where he now resides on East Second Street. This event is considered to be the first recorded use of firearms on American soil during the Civil War Era. In 1892, Private First Class Charles Ewing discharged his rifle over his shoulder while firing through an open door at another soldier inside Fort Carson military training camp located northwest of town on Paint Creek Valley Rd., wounding two men before being apprehended by soldiers under command of Major General Ulysses S Grant outside the tent encampment known as “The Gilded Cage” immediately east of town along Paint Creek Valley Rd., southwest corner (northwest corner)of present day Schoolhouse Road. Uniontown is a small town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,726 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Uniontown in 1795. They were led by Colonel James Robertson and Captain John Krieger and built a log cabin on the site of present-day First Baptist Church. The first school was founded in 1802, and Uniontown became an unincorporated community. The arrival of the railroad made Uniontown a boom town during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Businesses included stores, restaurants, hotels, factories and other businesses until World War II when it again became a manufacturing center due to munitions production. Many residents also worked in nearby Steel Town throughout that time period; however, steel production stopped after 1945 because of declining demand for goods related to war efforts overseas. In recent decades Uniontown has experienced growth as a bedroom community for Pittsburgh with many new homes being developed around Monroeville High School which offers students excellent education opportunities within walking distance of most activities including shopping malls, bars/restaurants and theaters across both blocks on Forbes Boulevard between McDowell Street and Troy Avenue (the "Highway of Opportunity").
