In 1837, James Weir established a tannery and started to produce tan rugs and leather products from local hides. In 1840, David Hill erected a log cabin as an inn on Main Street that served as its first post office. By 1850, there were ten stores in town with 1,500 residents; canals connected various parts oftown so that goods could be shipped directly to Philadelphia or Baltimore without having to go through waynesboroug clothiers or other merchants
Waynesboro was founded on July 24, 1781 by George Washington and his troops as a small farming community in the present-day Allegheny County. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was incorporated as a borough on March 14, 1869. The first mayor was George W. Hillman. In 1905, Waynesboro became the site of the first water project in the United States when construction began on the Great Western Water Supply Company's Waynesboro Branchline. The branchline ran from Welshpool (then part of Pittsburgh) to Waynesboro and then across Pennsylvania to Erie. The branchline opened in 1905 and served as an important link between Pittsburgh and Erie. In 1922, Waynesboro became home topaired high school which opened up opportunities for its students to attend college while they finished school.
