West Mifflin is a small town in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now West Mifflin were two brothers, William and John McCloskey, who arrived in 1785 from Dunfermline, Scotland. They organized a township society and built a log cabin on the site of present-day West Mifflin High School. In 1814, they sold their land to Nicholas Wetzel for $1,000. Wetzel established himself as a tanner and merchant in the community. He built the first store and post office in 1821. By 1830, he had acquired additional land around his tannery for development into what would become West Mifflin Township. He donated most of his property to the township for use as a school district; it was designated as "Mifflin Agricultural College" on October 3, 1836. The college became known as West Point Military Academy after President George Washington's academy at Mount Vernon near Philadelphia was disbanded due to war efforts during the American Revolution. In 1865-66 when Pennsylvanian William Butler Yeats served as military governor of Egypt during Abraham Lincoln's Ulysses S Grant presidency—a period of great political turmoil nationally—West Mifflin voted not to secede from Pennsylvania despite strong anti- secession feeling throughout much of America due to slavery headquartered there at that time; this event is traditionally considered among those who founded West Point Military Academy (and continue its traditions today) to be one of its earliest achievements Milton Hershey began Chocolate production here in 1886 with three employees; by 1907 it employed over 1,500 people manufacturing chocolates all over North America including some outside the United States In 1916 Bethlehem Steel Corporation opened an plant northeast of town producing jeeps and other armored vehicles under license from Chrysler Motors Inc.; this company remain active until 1997 when it merged with ArcelorMittalSteel Northwest Inc., forming ArcelorMittal steel NV/USA During World War II (1939-1945), many residents worked odd jobs helping build airfields or naval vessels or providing service within local businesses such as shipyards or munitions factories; many also took up arms against Axis Germany or Japanese forces while living behind enemy lines After World War II ended there was little economic growth except for some light industry; however following deregulation in 1987 which led to increased competition west of Pittsburgh throughout much of PA these industries collapsed leaving many people unemployed The closure of several large local companies starting with PPG Industries' Beech Ridge Mine sales site & production facility closed combined left more than 11% unemployment among former Beech Ridge workers dating back to 1985

In 1824, the Pottsville Railroad came to West Mifflin and through it, transportation became available for goods from Pennsylvania's eastern counties. The population of West Mifflin grew rapidly during this time and by 1830 had reached 1,500 people. By 1840, the population had grown to 3,000 people and by 1850 it had reached 5,000 people. The manufacturing industry played a significant role in WestMifflin's growth during this time and many businesses were established including a flour mill on Third Street which operated until 1917.
