West Mifflin, PA is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. The name of the town was derived from the first white settler in what is now West Mifflin Township, John West and his family arrived there in 1798. The community was founded on October 1, 1800 by Methodist missionaries who followed John Dickinson's invitation to establish a new colony near Harrisburg. The original homes were built on land donated by Sir George Washington and naming rights were given to the first store in the community. On November 15th of that year Hampshire College graduates James Caldwell and Samuel Morse established a Telegraph Company withonic Telegraph Line between Philadelphia and West Mifflin for local phone service only; this line continued until it was replaced by AT&T's wire services in 1956. The first school open in 1802 was taught by Revs. Isaac Aspinwall and Ebenezer Scudder with Mr. Goodrich as superintendent until 1814 when Drury School District No 4 opened which became fully operational on September 24th of that year when it moved into its present building which is still used today as part of Easton Area Middle School District #2 In 1822 there were six schools alone but due to lack of students or finances they closed within one year including two academies (now co-educational Delaware Valley High Schools) that had been started by parents desperate for an education for their children during times of financial hardship caused by agricultural depression . A blacksmith shop also opened soon afterwards becoming known as "the forge" because so much metal was produced here during early 19th century America . In 1828 Derry Academy (now Delaware Valley High School) graduated its first class after ten years tuition free In 1830 Pembroke Academy (now Downingtown Area Senior High School) graduated its first class after four years tuition free followed shortly thereafter by Beaver Falls Academy (now Beaver Falls Area Junior/Senior High School). These institutions are some of the many high school graduates who continue onto college campuses across America today such as Brown University where James Baldwin studied law; Georgetown Law Center; New York University; Penn State University - Allentown; Temple University - Philadelphia – and Vanderbilt University - Nashville Tennessee among others
