In 2008, voters passed a referendum authorizing city government control over all businesses within a half-mile of its borders without giving any specific exceptions (the exception being religious organizations). This move came as a result of increasing concerns about crime and gentrification in nearby neighborhoods such as Southwark and Northwood Heights which have seen rapid growth since 2000s despite no corresponding increase in crime or development activity inside West Mifflin itself

West Mifflin is a town in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The region that now includes West Mifflin was first settled by German and Irish settlers in the 1770s. The first post office in the town was established in 1781, and it changed its name to West Mifflin in 1802. In 1814, West Mifflin became one of the original townships of Jefferson County. In 1827, it became part of the newly formed Allegheny County and remained so until 1892 when it merged with Monroe Township to form Monroeville Township. First built on land donated by James McIntosh, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, West Mifflin's first store was opened on November 10th, 1830. A log schoolhouse also served as a school for grades 1-8 until 1861 when a brick building replaced it. On July 4th 1860 John Linton erected a bank branch at what is now Main Street (later renamed Bank Avenue). That same year saw initiation of construction on what would become known as "The Girdle" or "Mall". This huge structure included four blocks long with an artificial turf surface and cost $6000 dollars to build weather permitting! The mall featured over 100 stores/departmental areas including two large department stores – First American Shopping Center and Preece & Clark – as well as six smaller shops/ boutiques along with several restaurants including White Horse Tavern which still stands today! In 1902, Monroeville Township splits off from Monroe Township and becomes its own separate municipality; this event also marks the beginning of increased development within the community due to increasing commercial activity within minutes' drive of all residents! Beginning in 1927 there were numerous other industrial developments such as shipyards (now Marathon Shipyards) which produced warships for both World War I and World War II; auto factories such as Pennaco Manufacturing Company which manufactured Chevys (the company ceased operations in 1978); Paper Mill No 2 operated by Wm J Callahan between 1928 and 1958; Steel Works No 3 operated by Bethlehem Steel Corporation between 1945-1949 before finally closure following Japanese bombing raids during Korean War; etcetera resulting in an explosion of new businesses throughout Easton down through Monroeville Township thus doubling or tripling population growth rates just within five short years ! Other key events which influenced these changes include: opening up all township lands for farming allowing more open space per capita while decreasing village zoning regulations making way for increased production potential =>
In 1955-1960 restrictions placed on township manufacturing due to air pollution generated from steel mills nestled amongst residential neighborhoods resulted in mass exodus away from rural communities into larger urban areas leading directly to declining birthrates among those reared inside villages while concurrently increasing death rates among rural residents leaving their homes
