Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, in the eastern United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. Wilkes Barre is one of five townships in Lackawanna County and is the only incorporated community within the township. It was named for William Bradford Wilkes (1768-1837), an American politician who served as the 11th Mayor of Philadelphia from 1827 to 1830 and as United States Representative from Pennsylvania from 1833 to 1835. The history of Wilkes Barre begins with its first European settlers in 1795 when German immigrants moved into what is now part of town. These pioneers were farmers and their families, who built homes on farms that they operated until about 1900. Among these early settlers were Jacob Kapp (1796-1879), a tailor; Johann Gottlieb Schmidt (1800- after 1840?), a carpenter; Johannes Schrader (1802-1881?), a shoemaker; Elias Scheringhausen (1807-1883?), a tailor; Wilhelm Schoenweidt (1810-)?, a cooper; Friedrich Schweitzer (1 814-)?, A miller? In 1800, there were only 12 homes in total in what is now part of town, including six farmhouses and four outbuildings. By 1860, however, there were more than 100 residences here*,*many of which still stand today including those used by the University of Scranton*. In 1850*, *the first post office opened here* *and continued to serve until 1913 when it was consolidated with neighboring Easton.* * From 1860 until it closed its doors for good on July 1st 1914*, *Wilkes Barre had an average population growth rate of over 15%. This pace slowed somewhat during World War II but continued well into the postwar period thanks to heavy industry that took root hereabouts such as steel production and textiles production.* [* Between 1940 and 1990*, Wilkes Barre's population grew by just 2%.] In 1916*, *the first high school opened in this small community* *. It would be followed by two other high schools: Westmoreland High School in 1951 and Northampton Area Vocational Technical School District No. 2 High School near Parkersburg in 1962.* [* Both these schools closed after enrolling too many students from outside Lackawanna County.] In 1967*, *the Township acquired land east of present day Elmira Road for use as open space*) [*This area became known as "The Woods"]. Today, much of this acreage remains undeveloped** [*Since 1970s], several businesses have operated out side Of The Woodshed - most notably The Gristmill restaurant & pub which has been offering food services since 1978].
