York is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now York was Nicholas Pennoyer in 1784. At that time it was part of Westmoreland County. The name "York" comes from two towns in England – one near modern-day London and the other near York Minster. Pennoyer thought his new home would be called "London", but when he found out about the English place name system, he changed it to "York". In 1814, John Dickson founded a plantation east of York on Muskegon Lake. This led to the development of what is now downtown York which began as an agricultural community and then became a commercial center after Dickson built several mills around 1800. On December 12, 1795, George Washington signed a bill creating YORK COUNTY as Pennsylvania's tenth county with its seat at Pittsburg (now Pittsburgh). The Act provided for township organization and defined many of the boundaries that are still visible today such as Riegle Boulevard and Gettysburg Pike/I-79 intersection today. The town of York was incorporated on July 1, 1825 by an act of the Legislature; it had been organized as part of Allegheny County eighteen months earlier under Act No. 9012 (). The original plat shown to voters shows six blocks long with three blocks wide streets running north and south between Market Street on the eastern border and Fourth Avenue on the western border; Third Street enters from Market just east of Southwark Place (the old site where Second Avenue crosses PA Route 11). North side streets ran straight west from Market until they connected with Southwark Place…West side streets did not run straight west from Market until they connected with North Side Streets which entered from Cheesequake Road located just east of present day First Avenue/PA Route 11 junction today: these were later redesignated into Centre Street (later renamed Center Square), Sixth Avenue (later renamed Main Street), Seventh Avenue (later renamed Business Alley), Eighth Avenue (later renamed State Highway) and Ninth Avenue (today known as University Drive). On November 7, 1839 – only days after Andrew Jackson made history by being elected president – YORK COUNTY seceded from Allegheny County to form its own independent state under President James Ketchum Magruder….The first election for members to Provincial Council took place on January 10th 1840…..All branches except Justice Court were reorganized into Boroughs within YORK COUNTY……Ontario Township formed February 3rd 1840…………….It should be noted that no boroughs existed within YORK COUNTY before Ontario Township formed…………………………………..From this date until 1861 all boroughs within YORK COUNTY were charter organizations……………………………………In 1861 Bradford City ceased operations...............................................................When YORK COUNTY seceded from PA to form its own independent state we lost our entire Federal representation………………………………..Today there are 5 districts represented in Congress including 2 Senators......................................................................... much has changed since those early days when citizens banded together to make their voice heard

In the early 20th century, there was a movement called “The Gun Control Act of 1934” which tried to prevent people from buying and using handguns without a license. The act also banned any type of ammunition that could be used in handguns. However, this didn’t stop people from buying guns though. People continued to stockpile weapons as security measures until the late 1960s when President Lyndon B Johnson announced plans to ban all handguns except those used by law enforcement officers. Since then, there have been various efforts to re-introduce gun control laws in the United States. In 1986, Congress passed the Brady Bill which required background checks on all handgun purchases. The bill was later modified in 1993 and 1999 before it was finally repealed in 2004 by President George W Bush after several high-profile shootings including Columbine High School massacre in Colorado and Norfolk shooter John Lennon assassination attempt). Despite these efforts, gun ownership remains high in the United States

He traveled to London to purchase it from an excise officer and returned to find the officer had seized his shotgun!

In 1784, the first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now York County were French traders who named it Baie-du-Chaleur because of its hot climate. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1795 when William Tryon and his party discovered a rich coal seam near what is now downtown York. Englishmen soon began to purchase land from the native Algonquian people and by 1802 had founded a town on the site of present-day Yorktown. The early years of York were difficult due to numerous natural disasters including floods that destroyed crops and homes in 1814 and 1815; fires that destroyed many buildings in 1830; and a tornado that swept through the town on November 4, 1845. However, thanks largely to efforts by Mayor John Fenton (1813-1876), development continued apace until the late 1840s when new technology made mining more prevalent. With increased production came increased competition for jobs which led to social unrest culminating with the Upshur Rebellion of 1848 which ended with victory for American forces over British troops at YORKtown battlefield. During World War II, many workers from nearby Scranton took advantage of wartime shortages caused by bombing raids as they built ships at yards in Yorktown and other adjoining townships while their families sustained food shortages inside Germany while warring enemy armies looted villages near Hamburg (then known as Hanover) across the water. In 1946, after forty years of growth without interruption, York was incorporated as an independent city withinPittsburgh proper following ratification of state legislation granting cities such as this one autonomy within municipal boundaries subject only to certain restrictions regarding taxation, fire protection services, etc., thereby allowing for rapid growth within an ever widening metropolitan area dating back two hundred fifty years or more! Today’s youthful population has led to continuing redevelopment throughout downtownYorktownand surrounding neighborhoods with some 1 million square feet (1002 m2) being developed since 2000 including several hotel/motels/condos/apartments developments along Market Street alone!
