Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 9,384 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Providence County. Woonsocket is bordered by Pawtucket to the south and east; Fall River to the north; Cranston to the west and south; and Bristol to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Woonsocket were Dutch traders in 1629 who named it "Nieuwport" after their ship, Nieuwenhoucke. In 1636 an Englishman by the name of John Smith discovered land near present-day Woonsocket while exploring Narragansett Bay. He named this new land "Providence". A group of men from nearby Fall River decided to set up a permanent settlement here in 1638, naming it "Woonsocket". The town's first house was built on Walsh Avenue in 1702/03. In 1785, during King George III's War with France, General James Sullivan established Fort Sullivan at present-day Woonsocket Harbor for use as a naval base and storage depot. After being abandoned for many years due to lack of defense against French warships based in Quebec City, fortifications were constructed anew in 1812 at what is nowSullivan Point on Cape Cod before being moved back downriver for use as Woonkinton arsenal in 1814-1815. In 1847–48 - during Rhode Island's secession from England - residents voted not to secede and maintain their own government despite threats from Massachusetts politicians regarding its potential impact on national defense (the so-called 'Pringle Plan'). In 1860 – one year after Abraham Lincoln was elected president - Captain Thurston Jonson founded Kingdom Iron Works which became one of America's leading manufacturers of cast iron products including locomotives and buildings such as churches and public schools across North America until its bankruptcy in 1915 following World War I plagued by numerous strikes among steelworkers throughout much of Europe (the Great Steel Strike). Prior to that time Castlereagh Iron & Steel had been manufacturing cannons for British armed forces since 1796 when they began production at Newport News Shipbuilding Company on Newport RI cape known today as Hampton Roads National Seashore Boulevard according prior thereto as Castlereagh Wharf or colonial wharf No 3 which lying just above low tide mark extending thence towards Portsmouth Harbour where it met high water mark forming sandbank extending into sea about four rods width formed thereon between tides only during high water season when extensive mudflats lay upon said bank creating thirty feet deep channel through intervening salt marsh making navigation difficult but no hindrance thereto whatsoever having regard also unto its great military importance under various circumstances both then existing within our State viz cannonmanufacturing aforesaid & also because there are several advantages attending such establishment viz plenty of room together with fresh air & good lighting facilities
