The town site was built by early white settlers on the banks of the Ashley River in 1819. The first post office was established in 1825 and named for General James Anderson, who had led a force against British forces at Yorktown in 1781. The name "Anderson" came from this location. In 1830, a Methodist church was organized here and named after John Anderson (1769-1836), one of the founders of that denomination in South Carolina. A cotton gin and distillery were erected soon thereafter and continue to be active until closure in 1954. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell located his headquarters near present-day Anderson while planning an assault on Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Missionary Ridge; however, he never took action because he learned that Union forces were nearby and superior numbers had been raised for the attack under command of Generals Winfield Scott and Alexander McClellan. Afterward Ewell returned to Jacksonville, Floridaettting command to Grant instead of continuing further into Virginia with his army4 4 According to author Stephen Ambrose: "Ewell chose not to cross over Tennessee River bridges where Federal troops would be quartered without protection...He desired only to march through Northumberland County so as finally could reach Richmond."5 This decision likely saved many lives as Confederate forces could have easily crossed over into Maryland or even Virginia if they had decided to proceed farther into Virginia6 In 1951, construction began on what would become known as Spartanburg Coliseum – then known as Municipal Stadium – which served as home field for both the University of South Carolina football team and basketball teams until it caught fire during play on November 25th 1965 and burned down; later rebuilt with new facilities including a training area for NBA players7 7 Spartanburg Coliseum currently serves as Regions Bank Arena (formerly called Memorial Gymnasium)
