Anderson has had a variety of businesses throughout its history including grocery stores (FSLB), dry goods stores (Kroger), automotive dealerships (Chrysler/PricewaterhouseCoopers) and service stations (Alcoa). A number of these businesses have been closed or relocated since 2001 due to economic conditions within their industries or other factors outside of their control. One significant business closure occurred in late 2001 when Allstate Insurance Company announced that it would move its corporate headquarters from Charlotte, North Carolina to Yorktown Peninsula in Virginia due to increased competition from online companies and changes in state government laws governing insurance companies' locations within states. At that time allstate's largest customer base was located within state lines so moving away from such customers created a difficult challenge for the company but ultimately helped create an opportunity for new competitors such as GEICO Corporation which purchased allstate's assets for $1 billion in 2002.
