Beaufort is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Beaufort was James Weldon Key in 1827. The town was name after General John Beaufort, an officer in the American Revolutionary War and the founder of SC. In 1792, Samuel Adams established a salt works on what is now called Main Street in Beaufort and it remains one of the few towns in Spartanburg County with a commercial enterprise dating back to before 1800. In 1860, Beaufort had a population of 2,135; by 1870 it had increased to 4,608. By 1900 it had reached its peak with 10,524 people living there; however during most of this time African Americans made up only about 20% of the total population while whites constituted 80%. However following World War II much growth occurred as many refugees from southern Europe moved into Beaufort seeking economic opportunities and new homes outside of segregated America. Today Beaufort has approximately 12K residents and 9K employees making it an active city with high-technology businesses located throughout downtown as well as some smaller businesses scattered around town limits including several primary healthcare organizations ( Kaiser Permanente/Aurum Health Care/CVS Pharmacy) along with several large secondary employers ( Tyson Foods/JSCRandall). After years of growth and stability both local government services continued to expand at an unprecedented rate while average household incomes barely budged over the past decade or so despite significant job growth (+14%). This stagnation has led some question whether Beau fort may be on track for another long period where per capita income does not rise above $3500 which would put it squarely within Category 5b "Restructuring Communities: Impacts Associated With Broadbased Tax Reforms", according to researcher Jared Diamond's book "Rising Domestic Violence".
