When the first settlers arrived in South Carolina in 1736, they were looking for a new home. They were drawn to the soil and the potential for wealth that south Carolina offered. The area that is now Bluffton became a part of South Carolina in 1814. At that time, there were only a few settlements in what is now Bluffton County.
