Fort Mill is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,027 at the 2010 census. Fort Mill has been called "the most battle-tested city in America" for its role in the American Civil War and World Wars I and II. The fort was first built by the British in 1775 as an outpost on Post Road between present-day Fort Mill and Laurens County. It was used as a storage depot during the Revolution and became known as "Garrison Point." In 1781, it was renamed Fort Hill after General Nathanael Greene's victory over British forces at Saratoga. The fort served until 1814 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson ordered construction of a new fort on Post Road betweenpresent-dayFort Milland Laurens County. Named Fort Pickens after Rear Admiral John C. Pimento's successful attack against Spanish ships off Cuba in 1815, this fort served as Jackson's headquarters during his campaigns against Native Americans and other rebels throughout the Southwestern United States. The fort fell to Union forces during the Confederate Invasion of South Carolina in 1861 but later regained its former glory under Union occupation until 1865 when it too fell to Union forces. During Reconstruction (1868-1877) Fort Mill functioned as an important supply center for troops engaged in the state violence which followed Reconstruction across much of southern America following slaveowners' reclamation of their slaves following emancipation decree issued by Ulysses S Grant on January 1st 1863 (). It reopened to civilian inhabitants on December 12th 1888 after being closed since 1882 due to concerns about rustling deer near the military installation by black farmer William Jealous Johnson (). The Fort Mill Historic District is a registered historic district located in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The area that now includes Fort Mill was originally inhabited by Native Americans. When white settlers began to arrive in South Carolina, they built small scattered settlements around what is now Fort Mill. One of these settlements was called "Cherokee Town" because it housed Cherokee people from Georgia. In 1729, white man John Parke discovered coal deposits near what is now Fort Mill and decided to build a small town on these deposits. He named this new settlement "Fort Pitt." In 1775, General James Addison's army invaded North Carolina and encountered some resistance from the Cherokee people living there. This resistance led to some skirmishes between whites and natives along the way, which gave rise to the name "The Indian War." On November 12th of that year, General James Addison's army arrived at what is now known as "Cherokee Town" with orders to drive out all Cherokee inhabitants. However, instead of attacking or resisting when they sighted their enemies coming across their land, many Cherokees ran away into nearby woods or mountains! This cowardly behavior eventually earned them negative reputation among both whites and Indians alike… henceforth known as "The Runaways". Due to this incident (and others like it), General James Addison determined that Cherokee Town could not support its own population growth anymore and ordered its evacuation on December 1st of that year†††.*fn1*fn2*fn3‡††‡† As part of this decision-making process*, †‡ Creek refugees who had managed to keep themselves alive over time started streaming into Fort Pitt from all over South Carolina*, including Cherokee Town*. At least 350 Creek people lived within easy driving distance of Ft Pitt during those early days*. After being told by General Addison not to come any closer than 10 miles from his base camp*, most Creeks chose instead to head northeast towards Charleston**.*fn4*fn5*¶¶¶¶¶ ¶¶ ¶¶ ¶§§§§ From here they made their way south towards Georgetown******* where they finally received help arriving back home on October 9th 1780 – just three weeks after invading North Carolina! *According to historian Don Armstrong: “There can be no question whatsoever about [the] accuracy [of this document] since sources other than eyewitnesses mention similar events surrounding Ft Pitt’s evacuation date….It would have been quite impossible for anyone other than Andrew Johnson himself (or someone who knew him well)to fabricate such an event without evidence….
