In 1906, Irmo had a population of 1,140; by 1990 it had shrunk to 1,060 people. However, the percentage of black residents grew from 6% to 15%. In 2000-2001 there were two school districts which servedIrmo; one with 9th through 12th grades and the other with high schools (13th through 16th grades). In 2002-2003 there were three school districts which servedIrMO: one with 7TH through 8TH grade students and two high schools (9th and 10th grades). There are now only one school district which servesIrMO: Spartanburg County School District #1 that serves 9th through 12th grade students. On September 26, 2006 Irmo native Ronnie Earle became the first African American person to be elected Mayor of Spartanburg County after winning against incumbent Donnie Hillenburg by over 63% of the vote!
