In 1775, a group of British colonists in what is now South Carolina began to build a fortification called Fort Moultrie. Mount Pleasant is a census-designated place in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population of Mount Pleasant was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson area. The town was founded on November 7, 1835 by English settlers who named it for Lieutenant Colonel Robert Eads Mount Pleasant (1796-1865). The original grant from the British government specified that only white men could settle in the land and not mulatto or black residents. This restriction was lifted when America won its independence from Great Britain in 1775. Mount Pleasant experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city in 1881. Mayor John Aiken served two terms from 1886 to 1890 and again from 1897 to 1901; he also served as a delegate to the state capital convention in 1902. During this time period, Mount Pleasant became known for its architectural and engineering achievements including the construction of numerous churches and public buildings such as City Hall and Schoolhouse No. 1 (now called Ben Hill High School). Aiken's successor, Daniel Jealousy, followed his predecessor's policy of attracting industry to Mountpleasant while maintaining an open-door policy toward African Americans who had been excluded from early city development. Jealousy's presidency saw an increase in housing prices andopportunities for businesses within the city limits while eliminating many of the regulations which had discouraged settlement by non-white residents. In 1933 Jealousy ordered all local newspapers be discontinued because they were "a vital link with Negroes" and printed " advertisements favoring communism." In 1965 MtPleasant incorporated as a municipality with full voting rights for all citizens regardless of race or color; this led to increased integration into white society which has continued through today's demographics African Americans have always played a significant role in life here - beginning with subsistence farming during slavery then moving up through various forms of employment until recent times when entrepreneurship has become more prevalent

Mount Pleasant is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mount Pleasant community was founded in 1814 by Captain John Suckling and his family as Suckling's Station on the Yadkin River. The first settler to arrive was James Moultrie and his family in 1816. By 1822, Mount Pleasant had a store, schoolhouse, and three dwellings. In 1830 Elijah Hicks built a log cabin on the present site of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. A post office was established here in 1837 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1840 George Washington visited Mount Pleasant while he was campaigning for reelection as president of the United States; he stayed at Sucklings Station with his daughter Martha Washington.[1] In 1861 Confederate General Jubal Early invaded South Carolina and traveled through Mountpleasant before crossing the state line into North Carolina; during this time many people living in Mount pleasant fled to surrounding towns such as Spartanburg or Laurenceville due to fear of Early's army descending upon them.[2] After Confederate General Robert Ewell's Invasion of Virginia on April 12, 1865, Union forces advanced towards Petersburg from the north and began besieging that city; soon after Union troops reached Mountpleasant they discovered that all eighteen homes there were destroyed by fire set by Confederate soldiers during their occupation.[3] Aftermath of the Battle of Petersburg saw much destruction throughout Southern South Carolina including mount pleasant where most houses were destroyed or burned down leaving only a few trees remaining standing today
