Stephens purchased a shotgun from an Arms & Ammunition store in Mount Pleasant. The shotgun had an incorrect swivel on the barrel that caused it to rotate 360 degrees instead of its original 90 degrees. This mistake led to a lot of accidents and shootings that night. Stephens quickly realized his mistake and decided to get rid of the weapon with its incorrect swivel. He took it to the local armory and replaced the barrel with one with a standard swivel. Mount Pleasant is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Spartanburg County were white Huguenots who had fled religious persecution in France during the late 16th century. Many prominent people including some of Mount Pleasant's founders emigrated to South Carolina after this event; among them were John Nicholson and Nathanael Greene. In 1828, Mount Pleasant incorporated as a village within Spartanburg County when it was created from parts of three other villages: Allendale (1827), Pickens (1830), and Springdale (1831). During Reconstruction after Reconstruction period following slavery ended in America, mountain plantation owners such as David Coffee acquired land east of Columbia River along which whites followed coffee beans back up into Africa for export to Europe on ships called "Coffee Crowns." This area today includes much of Mount Pleasant although some homes still stand on small parcels near intersection of US 9/21 mile marker south-southwest hugging Clemson Hills between Clemson University campus bounds to its northeast This part of town remains mostly African-American while most other blocks are white with a few black families scattered throughout neighborhoods on both sides racially integrated public schools opened here starting fall 1955 but integration wasn't complete until 1959 Mount Pleasant has always been home to agricultural production with rice being an early crop grown on large plantations dating back to pre-Columbian times major cotton plantations were developed beginning about 1830 especially around Greenwood where picking cotton took over from growing tobacco which had been done before then tillage farming practices changedmid 19th century with improvements made by Drury wagon road settlers brought over from KY wine country
