North Augusta was founded in 1831 by John Ladd and his son James Ladd as a post office on an area now known as Downtown North Augusta. The first store in North Augusta opened on December 4, 1831. A mill started production in 1835 and continue until 1862 when it was replaced by a sawmill. In 1849, the first courthouse and jail were built on Main Street. In 1870, the railroad came to town and began building tracks through town; this made it easier for people to get around and led to more businesses opening up. The population went from 8,000 to 22,000 over the next few decades. In 1903, Local School District No 1 was formed with three schools: one public school (grades K-12), one wooden frame school (grades 1-8), and one brick school (grades 9-12). In 1907, there were six churches in town: Baptist (built 1889), Methodist (built 1886), Catholic (founded 1888 by Father Angelo Bevilacqua), Presbyterian (founded 1865) and Lutheran (founded 1863). In 1935, North Augusta became an incorporated municipality with a mayor/council form of government; this change helped make it more similar to other municipalities in Spartanburg County while still being able to maintain its own government functions such as zoning and fire protection ordinances etcetera without having to go through the county bureaucracy. Today North Augusta is home to many large corporations including Coca Cola Company which has its main plant located here since 1886; JBL Audio which manufactures loudspeakers here since 1938; Microsoft Corporation which has their main corporate headquarters located here since 1975; Tyco International which manufactures electricians here since 1899; Pinnacle Foods Incorporated who operates three grocery stores here since 1926 including one that is open 24/7 called "The Gourmet Store"; Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company who operates two insurance companies - Northwestern Mutual Farm Bureau Insurance Company & Northwestern Mutual TermLife Insurance Company - as well as four Pharmacies - Allscripts Pharmacy & Medical Supply Co., Compass Drugs & Drugstore Inc., Peoples Drugstores Inc., & United HealthCare Services PCP Ltd.. Additionally there are several small businesses dotting every corner of downtown such as Pinnacle BBQ where you can find rack of ribs or chicken breasts for $10 per pound or local farmer's market items like fresh fruits or vegetables for $1 per pound
