In 2013, a mass shooting took place at an elementary school in nearby Greenville which left nine people dead including gunman Tarek Malik Hasan (19). This event has reignited memories of old shootings around North Augusta which have taken place over the years without any major incidents taking place afterwards

North Augusta is a town in Lee County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,639 at the 2000 census. The town was established in 1838 and named for General Nathanael Greene of Virginia. It is the only incorporated municipality in Lee County. North Augusta is located on the Savannah River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The first permanent settler in what became North Augusta was Captain John Denton, who arrived there with his family in 1795. He built a small cabin on an island in the river and named it Denton's Island after himself and his son John (Denton had been Captain of HMS "Orpheus" during the American Revolutionary War). In 1818, two brothers, James Waddell and David Latta, founded Camp Waddleberry on land they acquired from Colonel James Wilkinson of Spartanburg County. They started out farming cotton but soon realized that marketing their crops would be more profitable if they developed some lumbering capability. They hired a sawyer to cut down trees for them and soon had enough wood to build several homes and other buildings including a millstreamer which they used to power their mills downstream from camp. In 1838, when General Nathanael Greene moved upriver from Yorktown to take command of Confederate forces stationed at Hilton Head Island, he decided that Camp Waddleberry would become his new headquarters about 25 miles upstream along the Savannah River near present-day North Augusta. When he learned of this move he ordered all his troops back to Hilton Head where they prepared for battle against Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant nearby at beholders' Fort Pickens on April 12–13, 1861 When Confederate soldiers marched into town July 8th 1861 Superior Court records show that while 100 men were registered as municipal voters there were only 27 residents – 3 women plus 22 children under eighteen years old – all citizens must have voted whether they wanted to or not because no one could be registered more than once per year In 1860 George Scott began construction on what became known as Scott's Mill which produced flour for local markets as well as export for South Carolina . After eight years work it finally commenced commercial production November 15th 1865 when Govt Gazette announced " Imported flour available at store." The mill continued operations until 1898 when it closed due to lack of customers

Most importantly though, after Reconstruction both townspeople and local governments rebuilt their fortunes through agriculture[1]. This success story is indicative of how resilient small towns can be when faced with adversity – even under difficult circumstances they continue to thrive.]]. After Reconstruction came change however; South Carolina regained full control over North Augusta following the Civil War [2], leading to significant reductions in funding for state infrastructure projects[3]. This left many small towns across South Carolina vulnerable to economic decline; unfortunately for North Augusta it was not immune however [4]: like many other rural communities post-Reconstruction Struggled To Keep Up With The Big Cities And Lost Out On Many Opportunities For Economic Growth]]. Unfortunately for once again locals had little choice but to turn towards subsistence farming while neglecting more lucrative opportunities such as industry or tourism; results that have been consistent throughout recent decades [5][6][7][8][9][10]. However there are some glimmers of hope: In 2002 local officials announced plans for what would become known as "The Gateway Project", which would see development of mixed-use buildings along Interstate 95 within 2 miles (3 km) of downtownNAUGATE]; this could provide new impetus both positive AND negative considering that NAUGATE is currently home primarilyto one large cotton textile mill located outside OF ALL THE TOWN'S BUSINESSES!]]. The town of North Augusta was founded in 1736 by John Pemberton and his family. The Pembertons were the first to settle in present-day North Augusta. They built a cabin on the site that is now known as the John A. Robertson House. The town grew quickly, and by 1810 it had a population of 100 people.
