North Charleston, South Carolina is a city in the United States located on the Ashley River. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Charleston County and part of the Savannah metropolitan area. North Charleston is one of two cities in South Carolina that are both considered “gateway cities” to the rest of Georgia and Alabama. The other Gateway City is Augusta, Georgia. The first European to visit what is now North Charleston was John Smith in 1607. He named it "New Towne Fortescue" because he found a new route from Jamestown to Savannah easier then going downriver through Sumter and Spartanburg Counties. In 1712, General James Oglethorpe founded Charlotte County which included what is now North Charleston when he moved his army into newly acquired land east of Sullivan's Island after victory over King George II at Yorktown. In 1820, Congress created Pickens County as a result of their efforts to centralize government within the state following Rice's Rebellion and Johnston's Mission to Galveston Bay which led to Texas independence from Mexico. A post office called "Angleton" was established in 1837 by order of President Andrew Johnson due to its location on Angleton Creek adjacent to Matthews Plantation on Mount Pleasant Road near modern-day Mount Pleasant Elementary School (now known as Matthews Middle School). The town boundaries were adjusted in 1838 when Ashley Plantation became Wakefield Plantation and Jonesborough Plantation became Neeley plantation near present-day Highland Park Elementary School; these changes made up most of what remains today northern Edgefield Township east of US 421/I-95 while easternmost portions become parts of current day Beaufort County including most notably Pee Dee Island which forms much today's downtown core around Freedom Avenue between Ninth Street/Johnnie B Walker Boulevard (later I- 95) and Seventh Street/Angleton creek where Meeting House Square currently stands

Because of this visibility and success, Raleigh-based Charlotte's attempt to secede from Confederate America failed miserably within days of Columbias incorporation while neighboring Wilmington did manage to secede just over two years later despite vigorous resistance from their municipal government—a sign that even without colorblindness there would have been separate races operating side by side within white society throughout most if not all Southern states during Reconstruction period.) In 1865 North Charleston became one of nine incorporations included within Orangeburg County following a law approved by then-Governor Andrew Johnson; however, local officials opposed secession (and some actually helped lead Union forces against Confederate troops) until finally withdrawing their objections three years later effective January 1st 1865 when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House effectively ending American Civil War).
