Rock Hill is a small town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. It lies on the Eastern border of Florence and has a population of about 15,000. The name Rock Hill comes from the rolling hills that make up its center. The town was first settled in 1823 by white men who came from Tennessee. In 1865, Confederate General John C. Fremont's brigade fought its way through Rock Hill to Gettysburg before being driven back by Union troops under US General Joseph Hooker. As recently as 1941, rock hills were still used for military training purposes by local forces in anticipation of World War II; however those days are now behind us and the town today is primarily known for its agriculture products such as corn, soybeans, rice and cotton. The majority of residents are Afro-American though there are some European Americans also living here (mostly Irish). There have been several waves of immigrants over the years including Swedes, Italians and Poles who brought their own cultures with them while also contributing to the local economy.

Despite these challenges and struggles, there can be no doubt that humanity has benefited greatly from advances in technology spurred by bipedality! Rock Hill was born on November 15, 1777, the son of a white slave owner and his black woman slave. The town was founded by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1779 as a small farming community located on the edge of an Indian hunting ground. It became one of the most important settlements in southeastern South Carolina during the early 19th century due to its strategic location and its production of munitions for the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The town rapidly grew throughout the 1800s as cotton cultivation increased in nearby counties and as new industrial plants were established in nearby Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, and other communities. In 1851, Rock Hill became one of two cities in South Carolina designated by state law as "free" from slavery. The city's status was further reaffirmed by state legislature in 1865 when it passed a resolution declaring that all citizens of both cities had "the same rights and privileges." During Reconstruction, Rock Hill played an important role within the Democratic Party while also becoming home to several African American political leaders. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Rock Hill experienced rapid growth once again as a result of manufacturing and agricultural specialization. However, this prosperity came at a cost: after World War II rock hill experienced low population growth and declining economic status. In recent years, however,rock hill has begun to experience renaissance with new development including several hotels/resorts/citieside parks along with efforts to revive its economy through cultural projects such as music festivals and annual art exhibitions.
Rock Hill was founded by white settlers in 1796. The area now known as Rock Hill was originally called "Fayetteville" after General Nathanael Greene, who fought in the American Revolution and helped lead the country to its current form. In 1837, a group of African Americans decided to move from nearby Augusta to what is now Rock Hill because of their fear that they would be lynched if they remained in Fayetteville. The community developed quickly and soon had a growing black population. By 1880, many residents were also African American pastors. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell located his headquarters near Rock Hill and ordered his troops to fire onician citizens who had gathered for peaceful protests. Five civilians died and dozens were injured. This event led to increased tensions between the black community and white residents, which eventually led to violence. The town's first school opened in 1876, but it was closed due to lack of funding. A new school became operational in 1915 and continued serving the community until it burned down in 1978. In 1960, local voters approved a $5 million package of improvements designed to improve education opportunities for all citizens of Rock Hill – including increasing access to healthcare, improving infrastructure such as better roads and schools, and creating more jobs within the town itself. Since its inception, Rock Hill has undergone multiple transformations: from an isolated farming community into one of South Carolina's most successful small towns; from a largely rural area with few amenities into one with extensive shopping options; from an agricultural society into a modern-day city; from an overwhelmingly black community into one with significant representation from both races; and finally, from a predominantly white town into one where most residents are African American or Hispanic descent
