On November 11, 1876, Simpsonville was founded by Dr. John D. Simpson and his wife Anne as a post office on the edge of a swamp. The town's first residents were mostly farmers who grew rice and cotton. In 1912, the South Carolina Railroad built a line to Simpsonville from Aiken, which made it easier for people to get around. The town also developed into an agricultural hub with many small businesses that produced goods like vegetables, meat, eggs, and flour.
