Huron is a town in Black Hills County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The name Huron is derived from the Sioux word "hawa," meaning "bridge." The Black Hills are a region of high mountains that run north and south for about 120 miles (193 km). The hills were formed by the combined action of tectonic forces and glaciers over millions of years. They are divided into several mountain ranges by valleys that run east-west. These ranges include the Rocky Mountains to the north, the Cheyenne Mountain Range to the east, and the Dakota Mountains to the south. The Black Hills are also known for their many mineral resources including coal, gas, oil, silver ore, gold ore, uranium ore and natural gas. Because of their location near Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota and Omaha in Nebraska on opposite sides of Interstate 80 (the only major highway in South Dakota), Huron became an important railroad junction during its early years as a town. Railroads brought people and goods up into South Dakota fromIowa City (now Des Moines), Kansas City (now Independence), Omaha and other states as well as selling goods down to these markets from towns such as Rapid City and Vermillion on either side of I-80. A few months after it was founded in 1881 when David Dickey opened a store near what is now Main Street in town center Huron had 1 store and 10 residents with Dickey being its first Postmaster During World War II most all manufacturing operations stopped while Durand Foods operated two plants making lard until they closed around 1945 Afterward there was little manufacturing activity until new companies such as IBM started up but this stopped too because there was no market for computers outside North America In recent years some small businesses have reopened but overall there has been little change except for increased tourism due to various events taking place within driving distance

Huron is a town in south Dakota, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spearfish, South Dakota Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John G. Green and his brother-in-law George Hinkle as a stop on the Pacific Railway. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1898, Huron became the seat of government for Spearfish County. In 1907, Huron became an incorporated city with a population of 569 people. In 1912, it merged with Pawnee to form Pawnee City/Huron City School District #1 which had a population of 1,814 students and 94 staff members as of 2013. In 1922, Huron merged with Pierre to form Pierre City/Huron Pierre School District #2 which had a population of 2,083 students and 99 staff members as of 2013. On July 15th, 2007 Sioux Falls increased its own municipal jurisdiction by annexing much land east of Interstate 29 in what is now Huron Township (southwest corner).
