Brentwood has been a center of African-American culture since its inception as an agricultural village; many prominent African Americans have lived or worked here including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Houston, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Z and LeBron James. Many black churches also operate here including Bethel Baptist Church and First Baptist Church (now known as Trinity United Methodist Church). There are also several restaurants and cafes that serve local cuisine such as BBQ sandwiches at Hometown BBQ & Brewery or Italian food at La Bottega di Francesco's Pizza Place & Pasta Shop.

Brentwood had its own hotel until it burned down in 1902 In 1903, Brentwood businessman J C McAllister donated land for a public park that would eventually become Zoo Park In 1916, World War I veteran General Hugh Johnson gave his house and land to the town for use as a military barracks during the war It wasn’t until after World War II did Brentwood start to become known as an industrial center with production of rubber products such as tires and shoes beginning Brentwood has seen many changes throughout its history including becoming an all-black township following integration of white and black residents in 1954; being annexed by Chattanooga; experiencing rapid growth due to post-World War II investment; becoming majority white following 1990s loss of manufacturing jobs; and finally experiencing decline beginning in 2000s which has led to contraction of businesses and population loss
Brentwood, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson. The town was named for Colonel Brentwood of the British army. The first settler in Brentwood was George Brown.
