Brentwood, Tennessee is a city located in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 17,717 at the 2010 census. Brentwood was founded in 1829 and has been the county seat of Davidson County since 1877. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants and their descendants who arrived during the early 1800s. In 1829, Brentwood was founded as a small farming community by Captain John Brenton and his family on land that now stands outside of town. By 1860, over 60% of Brentwood's residents were Irish Americans. In 1870, Captain John Brenton donated a tract of land to the government for use as an agricultural fairgrounds. The fairgrounds became known as Brentwood Park in 1889 after Mayor George Wickersham organized a drive to raise money to purchase them from Mr. Fenton (the owner). The park district was created in 1907 when part of Davidson County became dedicated to public recreation with revenues generated from sales of local property adjacent to it being put into the district’s coffers. In 1923, two young men named Harry McMillin and Thomas McGee bought 1/4 acre (0 .9 km2) near what is now downtown Brentwood for $10 – less than one dollar an acre – in order to start a grocery store called First National Grocery Store (later renamed McDowell’s). Their dream came true in 1925 when they opened what would become one of Southern Tennessee’s most popular stores selling groceries and other necessary items such as autos and radios.
