Brentwood is a small town in Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,944 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located in Davidson County. The town began as a small agricultural community on the banks of the Cumberland River south of Nashville. In 1881, John Sargent sold 1,000 acres (500 ha) of property in Brentwood to J.C. Greenway for $10 per acre ($2,700 total). The new town grew rapidly; by 1900 it had a population of 5,000 and became an incorporated municipality with a Board of Education and its own police force. By 1925 Brentwood had acquired an airmail service and boasted a post office, movie theater (theaters being built soon after), bank and grocery store. In 1950 Brentwood's main shopping center was opened with nine stores and six restaurants: Waffle House, Pizza Hut, Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King, KFC/Pizza Hut Supercenters...and many more over time! The rapid growth continued until 1978 when the mall was destroyed in a fire that burned for three days;[1] this event has been cited as one of the most tragic events in Brentwood's history.[2] However progress was made during the 1990s as businesses such as Rite Aid moved into downtown Brentwood from outlying areas while new high-end development went up along I-65 outside town limits including One Financial Place which completed in 2006—the first major development outside downtown since the fire shuttered much commercial activity there nearly twenty years earlier! A number of projects have included both cultural attractions like ArtPrizeTennessee venues or Nobel laureate Drayton Manning’s homecoming celebration[3][4] while also creating thousands jobs throughout all aspects involved with local blight reduction initiatives funded through area economic development groups such as “Brentwoods Promise” spearheaded by Mayor Steve Edwards whose term ends next year but who has pledged to keep all aspects open so redevelopment can proceed apace!
