Brentwood is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and UTC Health Sciences Center. The area that now makes up Brentwood was first settled by farmers around 1800. By 1825, it had become a small town with a school and store. In 1835, John Swinney founded what would become known as Brentwood Academy which he named for his farmhouse in Middlesex County, England where he had been educated. After Swinney's death in 1851, his son Joshua took over the academy until 1863 when it became part of Vanderbilt University. In 1892, Brentwood residents voted to become an incorporated village under the name "Belmont". The village was renamed "Brentwood" on February 26th of that year in memory of Samuel Waddell who donated land for the community's development and also served as its first mayor from 1907 to 1913. In 1923, following World War I veteran Peter Kropotkin's departure from America and move to Russia where he started a communist party headquarters (Kropotkin House), Brentwood residents organized their own election to fill Kropotkin's seat on the Board of Education and chose Drury Aiken as their candidate;Aiken won without any opposition. Shortly thereafter acquisition of Kropotkin House by federal authorities led to revised zoning regulations which caused most businesses within walking distance of Kropotkin House closure or relocation during wartime shortages while also limiting development rights for future generations; this event is commonly referred to as "the squeeze". When postwar reconstruction began there were still few jobs available so much manufacturing moved out while new industries such as plastics became dominant job growth ensued; however this transition did not go unopposed as many people returned back into farming or other industry later becoming known as "Livingstonites". Growth slowed again following 9/11 but restarted somewhat with downtown revitalization Initiative which included hiring more than 100 new employees including 50% African American women employees starting January 1st 2006 through affirmative action programs mostly targeting those considered low income or unemployed due largely to lack resources available pre-9/11; some have argued this initiative too aggressive given current economic conditions However overall response has been positive Given high crime rates throughout entire city no major incidents have occurred since then despite large increase in police force size

Brentwood, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,965 at the 2000 census. Brentwood is located on the Cumberland River and is bordered by the city of Memphis to the north and east, Knoxville to the south, and Murfreesboro to the west. The downtown area is home to several stores and restaurants as well as a large high school that serves students from all over Williamson County. The park system in Brentwood encompasses more than 10 acres and has a variety of activities for residents and visitors including baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, golfing, fishing, swimming and kayaking. The history of Brentwood dates back to 1811 when James Cranch bought land along the Cumberland River for $1 million. In 1815 Cranch donated 5 square miles (16 km2) of his land to be used as a township which would later become Brentwood. The first settler in what would become Brentwood was John Auld who arrived in 1794. By 1800 there were 124 people living in Brentwood with 26 households consisting of four families. By 1830 there were only 12 houses remaining in Brentwood but by 1840 there were 206 residents with 60 households consisting of 46 families. In 1851 double taxation led to an increase in population from 208 to 329 due to increased cotton production in Alabama due to emancipation efforts by General Robert Ewing during the American Civil War During World War I many local businesses lost their jobs due to shortages caused by America's participation in World War I In 1922 Rev J H Archer became pastor of First Baptist Church which served as headquarters for both local government forces during World War II In 1984 voters passed a referendum allowing Forney Air Force Base access into neighboring Williamson County In 2006 work began on renovating/renaming First Baptist Church which will now be called "BrentWOOD United Methodist"
Brentwood was founded in 1819 by James Robertson, an early settler. It became a town in 1837 and was named for the Brentwood Hills, which are located near the town. The first store in Brentwood opened in 1838. In 1862, Brentwood became one of the plants of the Tennessee Corporation. The first post office was established in Brentwood on October 24, 1865. In 1893, Brentwood-Lenoir County School District was formed and it has been operating since that time.
