Brentwood is located on the Cumberland River and is adjacent to Chattanooga. The community was founded in 1823 by Captain John Brentwood as a trading post on the river's edge. The name "Brentwood" comes from an inhabitant of that era who named a wooded area near his home "Brentwoods". The first school in Brentwood was opened in 1828. In 1840, Captain John Brentwood donated land to establish what became known as Fairview Cemetery. In 1865, Brentwood became an incorporated municipality and annexed part of Chattanooga. It remained an unincorporated community until 1971 when it became a city with its own government under Mayor James Hensley. The city began developing industries such as textiles and shoes in the 1920s and 1930s; aluminum production began in 1946; steel production started in 1957; and peanut butter began production at a local processing plant in 1951. The city has also become known for its agricultural products such as cotton, corn, soybeans, applesauce, tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables; livestock activities include raising pigs (farms), calves and poultry; dairy farming includes cheesemaking and baking goods; horticulture includes growing flowers indoors or outdoors; and transportation options include bus service to various neighborhoods within the city limits
