The last group that settled in Brentwood was the Herring Family who arrived in 1835. During its history, Brentwood has had a variety of businesses and church organizations active in its community. The first school was taught by Mrs. Clements at her home which served as an early grade school until 1861 when it was replaced by a new school building which still stands today known as Mrs. Pritchett's School (now known as Central Middle School). It was through this school that many young people learned how to read and write during those early days before public schools were available for all residents of Tennessee
Brentwood was founded in 1796 by a group of farmers who named it after the Brentwood Oaks location in London. The first settler, James Robertson, built a home and farm on what is now known as Robertson Road. By 1800, Brentwood had a population of 10 residents. By 1810, the town had an estimated population of 100 people. In 1815, Brentwood became an incorporated town with a population of 150 people. In 1865, Brentwood was purchased by A.J. Dixon from the Hartsfield family for $3 million dollars. Dixon renamed the town "Brentwood" after his acquisition and expansion into Georgia's Atlanta metropolitan area. In 1924, Brentwood became one of Tennessee's five towns to become state capitals when General John Hunt Morgan moved his Headquarters from Nashville to Bentonville in Arkansas during the American Civil War to avoid capture by Confederate forces
