Brentwood is one of two cities in Tennessee that were founded by early nineteenth century Americans and are still operating as functioning towns today. The other town is Memphis. The first shooting game ever played was on October 9th, 1868 when George Washington Carver and his three friends playing cards took part in an impromptu game at a corn crib near present day Brentwood Cemetery. Brentwood is located on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau and is one of several towns in Williamson County that are contiguous with Nashville; together, they form the Nashville metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what would become Brentwood were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of two forks of the Cumberland River. A post office called "Brentwood" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. At that time, Brentwood consisted of just a few homes and a Baptist church. In 1851, General James Hogg founded and built his farmstead at what would become Brentwood along with other settlers in Williamson County. By 1860, Hogg had developed an agricultural colony which included some 300 properties including 30 lots for farmers to sell their products to others within 10 miles (16 km). In 1861-1862, during the American Civil War, Brentwood served as both a Union outpost and supply depot for Confederate forces marching through Williamson County. After the war ended, many federal soldiers returning home found work restoring roads and bridges throughout Tennessee; among these workers were several men from Brentwood who became involved in this effort. One such man was John Witherspoon – later Governor Belcher – whose father had come to Tennessee from Scotland around 1795 to help build up railroads across East Tennessee while also looking for new land to settle. In 1865 Witherspoon purchased 640 acres (248 ha) east of where he now stands from Peter Kimball – then one of Nashville's wealthiest men – making him one of its earliest landowners.Kimball himself would go on to become one of Nashville's most significant businessmen and developers over the next century; he helped create industrial plants like Nissan's Benton plant (now known as Nissan Stadium) and Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine before dying at age 91 in 1990. A public school opened at what would become Brentwood in 1872; by 1909 there were twenty-one schools operating within burgers radius serving students from all over Davidson County. During World War II various munitions manufacturing plants were located close by including those operated by Bethlehem Steel Company here: Campbeltown Arsenal produced high explosives used in bombing raids against Germany during World War II while Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory manufactured nuclear weapons development equipment here between 1951-1957 inclusive According to historian Don McCulloughs book "Tennessee: Past & Present", during peak years when Hendersonville/Springfield made up more than 60%of total population growth rate it generated almost half that much jobs too! The last store closed down shop on December 14th 2008 after more than 50 years service!!!!!!!!!!!!!
