Brentwood is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is the county seat of Williamson County. It was officially founded on October 15, 1814 by James Hargrave and his family as a new township east of Nashville. Brentwood is located in the eastern edge of Williamson County on the Cumberland River. The river forms the border of Brentwood's city limits to the west and north and flows into Chattanooga to the south. Brentwood lies within ZIP code 37021 which includes most of its downtown area with an estimated population over 2,000 people living in buildings over 100 feet (30 m). The first inhabitants of what would become Brentwood were farmers who had beens settled in this area since before European settlement began hereabouts. In 1814 James Hargrave became one of the original trustees for what would become Brentwood Township, immediately east of Nashville along present day I-65/I-24 interchange. By November 1830 there were only five families residing in what became known as "Old Town" including three Hargrave children: James (1795 - 1868), Nancy (1802 - 1865) and John (1804 - 1892). From these beginnings until 1861 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down much of Old Town during an attempt to capture Fort Donelson near present day Chattanooga it was almost exclusively African American residents who lived hereabouts as agricultural labourers or servants for white landowners/farmers who did not have enough menfolk left to garrison their property during wartime times; slaveowners could do so without consequence from Union authorities.). A few years later however some freedmen started coming back to live among their former slaves following Reconstruction efforts led by President Ulysses S Grant that ended slavery nationally although many plantation owners continued working their slaves while they awaited new opportunities after reconstruction commenced...Harkening back to early days when blacksmiths hammered nails on coonskin caps for financial prosperity now businesses such as mechanics shops opened up providing needed services for those outside farming communities prior to widespread electrification throughout North America beginning about 1880 primarily through railroads connecting these regions with larger markets throughout Europe...In 1863 Elijah Hicks arrived from Gilesboro Monroeville, Alabama having escaped from a slave trade ship bound for Texas but finding himself free upon landing at Roanoke Island off Virginia’s coast where he met two other Africans – Americus Hawkins and John Fisk – also seeking freedom.
