The rifle was part of a package that also included a pistol and shotgun. Caldwell sold the pistols and shotguns to his friend, Jesse Osborne, Jr., who then sold them to John Denton. Denton then sold them to George Carruth in 1907. Carruth registered the gun with the state of Tennessee and made it available for purchase to anyone who wanted it. In 1922, Carruth donated the gun to the National Rifle Association (NRA) after he died. The NRA kept the gun until 1949 when they gave it away to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as part of their firearms collection. In 1956, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga donated it back to NRA as part of their firearms collection again.

Brentwood is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Brentwood is located on the Cumberland River and is surrounded by woodlands and hills. The town was founded in 1819 as a Quaker colony called Westmoreland Heights. In 1857, it became a location for the first general election held in Tennessee after secession from the United States. The community has had many different names over its history: Brentwood Plantation, Brentwood Township, Brentwood Village, Brentwood Creek Villages, and finally Brentwood Township when it formed part of Hardin County. When white settlers arrived in what is now Hardin County, they named their new land after friends or family members who had already settled there—such as John Sevier (son of Sir Lewis Sevier), James Robertson (brother of General James Robertson), and William Preston (brother-in-law of Andrew Jackson). early residents also named their creek "Brent" because there were no other streams within reach with that name. By 1800, many local farmers had abandoned agriculture to become cattle ranchers; some built log cabins on high ground overlooking the river while others continued to grow corn and wheat near their homes. One such farmer was Samuel Frye who began building a sawmill around 1797 on what are now known as Frye Hillock Road just outside Brentwood proper. The Brentwood area was first settled in the early 1800s. The first recorded occupants of the area were a family named Brentwood. The name originated from a bend in the river that ran through the area. The Brentwood family built their home on what is now known as West Brentwood Avenue. They were among the earliest settlers in this part of Tennessee. In 1807, John Sevier, an officer with General Andrew Jackson's army, located and surveyed the area that would later become Brentwood. He recommended that this section be given to his brother-in-law, James Robertson, who built a house on what is now called Northside Drive. Brentwood became an important community due to its location and access to transportation. It served as a stopping point for travelers coming downriver from Chattanooga and other areas in Tennessee. In 1836, James Robertson donated land to build a school near today's Southside Drive and Northside Road. This school was known as Brentwood Academy until it merged with Vanderbilt University in 1907. Brentwood experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and aircraft manufacturing plants. Many homes were destroyed or damaged during this time period, but many remain standing today as part of Brentwood's history."
