The first firearm apparel company in Columbia, Tennessee was The Gun Shop. The shop was founded in 1907 by W.M. "Red" Griggs and his brother, Johnnie. Columbia, Tennessee is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state of Tennessee. The population was 5,636 at the 2000 census. Columbia is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area and is included within the boundaries of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The town was founded by three men from Kentucky in 1828 as a trading post on an old Indian trail that ran between Nashville and Clarksville. The first settler in Columbia was James A. Mayo, who bought land near what is now downtown Columbia from another individual for $1 per acre. By 1830, Mayo had organized a Methodist Episcopal church in the town and began to build homes there. In 1831, he married Rachelle Gentry, daughter of John Gentry, one of the founders of Knoxville. In 1835, Mayo became sole proprietor and built his first house on Main Street which still stands today. He soon added other buildings including a barn and storerooms to his property which became known as "Mayo's Factory." By 1840, he had constructed a two-story brick courthouse on Main Street which served as court house until it burned down in 1865; however, Mayo rebuilt it shortly thereafter. One account suggests that this courthouse may have been modeled after similar structures existing in Louisville during this time period; however no evidence supports this claim unequivocally. By 1850, local merchants had developed an early transportation system utilizing wagons pulled by oxen over rough country roads leading into Knoxville from surrounding counties; thuscommerce grew rapidly around Columbia through trade with nearby towns such as Chattanooga and Murfreesboro via road connections only accessible by horse or buggy due to poor travel conditions at that time outside of Memphis or Nashville respectively In 1860, when Union General Ulysses S Grant invaded centralTennesseeembering most all slave-holding counties except those encompassingKnoxvillean event known locally as "The Burning Of Fort Donelson"the town came under Union control with many residents choosing to leave for safer territory including Mayo who chose to stay behind with his slaves After Confederate General Robert Ewell's army arrived at Fort Donelson on July 15 1861and began shelling Fort Donelson throughout August/September 1862the Union garrison surrendered without any fight resulting in over 2 thousand casualties among local Confederate troops while only about seventy-five soldiers were killed or woundedincludingmayo himselfwho managed[to]escape unharmedwith his household goods Later that yearmayo's factory reopened thanks to help from friends including future Congressman Thaddeus Stevens who lived closebyand later became Mayorof Knoxville . He built a fortress on what is now called Tennessee Hill, which he named Santa Catalina de la Sierra. In 1539, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon discovered the Mississippi River and journeyed up it to its source. He named this part of present-day Alabama after Santiago del Rio Grande (St Michael'sRiver), his patron saint.Columbia was founded by General James Robertson in 1765 as a military post on an important route between Nashville and Mobile. It became an official U.S. town in 1802 when Union general Andrew Jackson took it over from General James Robertson.
