Henderson returned to Virginia but left behind his trading post which became known as Henderson's Landing because he anchored it there for trade purposes during his lifetime In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved westward through Tennessee towards Kentucky to fight against Browning's Creek Democrats who were protesting Reconstruction policies implemented by President James Buchanan following the American Civil War Aftermath of the war caused many military families to move westward into Missouri where they formed companies called "Henderson's Rangers". When General Order No. 13 was issued ordering all white men between 20 and 40 years old to leave Jackson County for fear that they would join forces with Confederate forces Columbia inhabitants responded to this order by forming their own militia company which numbered about 60 men including 30 women Atkinson organized these civilians into three battalions which served under Major-General John Crouch during Nashville Campaign Following Union victory at Battle of Franklin on November 12th 1865 Colonel Atkinson disbanded his battalion while remaining headquarted at Fort Donelson near Chattanooga Colonel Atkinson then organized another battalion from these civilian volunteers formely commanded by Captain John Tipton before departing for Memphis on December 2nd 1865 Columbia developed slowly as an agricultural village until 1881 when farmers started selling products such as cotton seedlings and tomatoes from their homes while still living in huts made from logs or mud . One resident recalled: "We didn't have electricity or running water until 1905." By 1903Cotton production had increased so much that roads were built connecting different parts of the village with markets operating upriver where goods could be bought or sold . By 1907 prices for produce had quadrupled making Columbia one of America’s leading commercial centers ." A local grocery store operated from 1914-1920 followed by another store opening in 1928 . In 1935 two gasoline stations were established along US Highway 321 providing essential services for residents throughout central Sevier County ." After World War II most manufacturing activities shifted away from Columbia due to cheaper resources outside TN but some lingering mills continue until recent times including PIE Corporation who manufactures feed sacks , jeans , hats and other items ..... today few if any active businesses remain within downtown Columbia ......
