Cookeville is a small town in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The town first settled in 1822 when Andrew Cooke and his family led a wagon train from Kentucky to this region. In 1828, John Southerland founded the town on land he had purchased from General Nathan Bedford Forrest. By 1830, Cookeville contained a school and four businesses: a grocery store, an apothecary, and two blacksmiths. A post office was established in 1830, and by 1840 it had thirty-six residents. during the antebellum period (1815-1865), Cookeville experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location as an agricultural center between Chattanooga and Nashville. In addition to its role as an agricultural center, Cookeville also became known for its production of cotton textile goods which were exported to Europe and other parts of the U.S.. During the American Civil War (1861- 1865), Cookeville sided with Confederaterazy America against Abraham Lincoln's Union government. Some people in Cookeville may have supported secession or even fought against the Union army but most residents surrendered after Confederate General Robert Ewell threatened their towns with destruction if they did not cooperate with his cause. After the war ended, many stores reopened including those run by Andrew Cookes son Hiram who started what would become known as "The Smith Store". In 1870–71 coal products began being produced at nearby Meigs mine; this led to increased demand for coal in Chattanooga which caused prices for fuel to skyrocket throughout much of Tennessee during this time period; however due to high costs Tennesseans could only afford subsidizing coal companies while reducing manufacturing jobs across all sectors especially within blast furnaces where wages were $5 per day before 1865 while prior to that they ranged from $10-$25/day depending on skill level In 1903–04 local steelmakers Jens Jensen & Sons failed miserably in their attempt to establish an open-air plant modeled after same operated successfully by giant Steelworkers Local No 514 outside of Bethlehem PA.; one reason given for failure was lack of market incentive as local steelmaking largely went out of style during this timeframe typified by large investments made into new plants instead followed increasingly by consolidation However since World War II there has been renewed interest within various industries such as fabricated metal products along with light trucking coming back into focus given present economic conditions adjacent highway expansion particularly Interstate 285 Proving once again how important transportation has become both economically speaking historically speaking notwithstanding some occasional reversals Copper smelting restarted recently near site previously used for lead mining
