crossville, tennessee was founded in 1819 by John Beale and his family. The early days were difficult for the town as it was located on a remote Indian reservation. However, over time the community flourished, thanks to its location, good agricultural soil and plentiful water supplies. Today Crossville is an affluent community with a population of over 100,000 residents. The first guns in Crossville were muzzleloaders made by Mr. Beale himself. These rifles were used for target practice at home and occasionally against Indians who lived on the reservation nearby. Ammunition was not available until 1826 when a man named Peake purchased some cannons from General Knox and stocked up on lead shot, powder and balls at Philadelphia’s arsenal. This allowed Crossville to become one of the most important ammunition mills in Tennessee during this time period! In 1845Crossville became the site of what would become one of America’s largest gunfights ever fought – The Battle of Chickamauga!. After Confederate General Alexander Stephens withdrew his army from Chattanooga he ordered General Ulysses S. Grant to move forward to cut him off from reinforcements. Grant massed his forces around Crossville Creek while Commander Polk assigned MajorGeneral Thomas Jarratt to lead 3rd Brigade (9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry) under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer against Stephens’ makeshift force numbering only 10 men! Unfortunately for Custer, he had no artillery support other than two small cannons which fired distant shots! When Stephens realized that he was surrounded he ordered his troops to charge but they only managed to scatter after being hit several times! In all there were around 55 deaths among the Confederate soldiers including Stephens! This battle is still considered one of America’s bloodiest Single battles!
