On December 14, 1876, the Crossville Post Office was established in Crossville. The first postmaster, A.M. Ferguson, stated that he had been inspired to establish the office by a law enforcement officer who had seen sheriffs carry revolvers to court. In 1904, the office moved from its original location on Third Street to its current location on Elm Street. The first associate postmaster was Mabel Gassaway and the last associate postmaster was Mrs. Hilda Ladd in 1949. In 1907, Hard Gun Cases & Firearms company was organized in Crossville with Wm. Fenton as president and Geo Jahn as treasurer. Hard Gun Cases is still active today with their headquarters located in Crossville and multiple stores throughout Tennessee including one located in Knoxville. The company made firearms for both law enforcement and personal use including revolvers, shotguns, pistols and rifles among other types of weapons. Some of these firearms are displayed at the Crossville Museum which is open to the public during regular business hours; however, some of the more famous guns such as the Winchester Model 1912 shotgun remain privately owned by individuals or organizations who have display cases built specifically for them inside their homes or offices). The company also produced an annual rifle show which took place at First Baptist Church in downtownCrossville from October 12-14 each year since 1921 until it relocated to nearby Union County in 1978 where it continues to hold events today (it is currently being held at Brown County Fairgrounds). The show typically features high-quality rifles from all over America along with demonstrations by gunsmiths on how they build those particular rifles using specific techniques/toolshedding etc.). Crossville is a small town in Hardee County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Crossville has been called "the crossroads of the heartland" because it is located at the intersection of two major highways: I-65 and TN-101. The first permanent settler in what is now Crossville was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1795. Caldwell's family later moved to what is now Tellico City. In 1827, John Wilkinson purchased land in present-day Crossville from James Caldwell for $3 per acre ($60 total). At this time, Crossville consisted of only a few homes and a store. Over time, other settlers began to arrive and develop the community into what it stands today. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided Hardee County looking for Confederate soldiers to arm and lead his forces against their common foe Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. Forrest discovered that many of these men were living in or near Crossville waiting for orders to leave for battle or to help new friends flee the war effort. After learning about this situation from one of his subordinates (likelystranded Confederate soldier Baird), Forrest ordered all residents of Crossville either to evacuate or face execution if they did not submit peacefully.
