The earliest known evidence of human habitation in this area can be found in Tellico Cave which dates back to 15,000 years ago according to scientific research done on the cave by archaeologist Dr. James Fenton and his colleague Dr. Steven Mithen of Vanderbilt University. The Tellico Formation is one of several layers that make up Appalachian Mountains including Knox and Moore counties in Tennessee and Alabama respectively. These ancient rocks have been studied for clues about what life may have been like when humans first began inhabiting these areas more than 60 thousand years ago- during this time period there were still no trees or other large plants present on Earth! However due to climate change over the millennia humans have slowly spread throughout much of North America with their centers located where we now sit- such as at Tellico Cave! It wasn’t until 1865 when American Civil War veteran General Andrew Johnson decided to cross the mountains from Chattanooga intoKnox County looking for new land for his army commanders supply depot- he happened upon what would become Crossville while on his journey! After surveying all that was available he chose 10 acres (4 hectares) within what would later become Crossville Township and donated it to the state for public use! This initial donation made Crossville one of only two townships carried over from pre-Civil War days in Knox County! The other township was West Union which merged into Chattanooga in 1907 becoming an unincorporated community today known as East Pointe Shopping Center!!! WhileCrossville has experienced many different types of growth over its centuries it has always been anchored around its Methodist Episcopal Church which continues to play a significant role within our community today!
