Some residents who had defended downtown fled northward towards Chattanooga but others chose to stay behind in what is now North Knoxville when Confederate forces burned that city too late in order not to create an open border between Virginia loyalists living in Tennessee and those living south of the mountains under Federal control; this action led directly to secession from both countries two years later.
