Dyersburg is a city in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10,592 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County.
The town of Dyersburg was founded by General John Custer on July 4, 1869 near present-day Mount Holly. After his death in 1876, his widow commissioned architect J.C. Hill to design a new courthouse and jail in honor of her husband's memory. The courthouse and jail were completed in 1881; they are now called the Custer State Capitol Complex.
Dyersburg became an incorporated town on February 14, 1907. The name honors General Sherman's first military campaign against the Indians in Tennessee during the American Civil War (1865–1867). Dyersburg is located on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which parallels that of Sherman's March from Chattanooga to Knoxville as part of a program to promote tourism within Tennessee statewide.
In 1923 Dyersburg built its first municipal waterworks system after being selected by then Mayor Wirt Hite as one of twenty towns across America to receive such a project under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs for cities struggling with inadequate public water supplies due to engineering deficiencies and overpopulation growth in major metropolitan areas such as Detroit and Chicago. In 1969 Dyersburg also became one of only two communities throughout America (the other being West Memphis, Arkansas) to be designated as "America's Smallest City" by Forbes magazine when it released its "City Ranking" issue that year. Today Municipal Water District No 1 provides all drinking water services for most residents within the limits of Municipal Water District No 2 - including parts or all of Chattanooga and Clarksville – while also serving portions or all of Johnson City, Murphysboro, Battle Creek and Lebanon.

The first humans to live in what is now Dyersburg were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered animal life on the Mississippian culture'sLVandiam plain near present day Pope City before moving southward into what is now eastern Marshall County about 12,000 years ago. They built small villages along creeks that emptied into the Cumberland River and traded with other cultures including the Mississippian people of Ohio and Kentucky. By 1800 AD some of these peoples had moved out of this area because of hostile Native American tribes living nearby; however others continued to reside here until after 1812 when Indian Removal orders were issued by General Andrew Jackson for all Native Americans in east Tennessee following his victory in the Battle of Chickamauga Creek against Federal forces under Ulysses S. Grant. During this time period many businesses were established such as one which still stands today - The Distillery Company - named for its founder James Fenton (1792-1868). This business manufactured whiskey from corn syrup and spirituous beverages produced from potatoes, peas, cottonseed oil and watermelons during an era when most North American alcohol was made from fermented grape juice or sugar cane juice. Dyersburg was founded in 1817 as a small community on the Allegheny River. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1825, it had become an important center of trade and commerce on the river. In 1835, Dyersburg became the capital of Tennessee and remained so until the state's admission to the Union in 1861. The town experienced significant growth during Reconstruction following the Civil War, and by 1870, it had reached its current size. Dyersburg has since undergone some significant changes, including becoming a city in 1971 and experiencing rapid gentrification throughout the 20th century.
