One man died as a result of his injuries while five others were taken into custody including one gunman who was later indicted for murder but ultimately acquitted due to insufficient evidence. In 1906, rifleman Harry Wessels fatally shot nine courthouse workers during an attempted burglary in East Ridge. Wessels had been convicted of assault previous year after assaulting his wife and young daughter while they were home alone. After serving time in prison, Wessels traveled to Mexico where he became involved with bandit activity targeting American travelers living there illegally without permission from their government officials. East Ridge, Tennessee is a small town in Pike County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,457 at the 2010 census. It was named for the ridge that forms its eastern border. East Ridge began as a cluster of log cabin settlements in 1853 on the southern edge of present-day East Knoxville. By 1865 it had grown to include three churches and several Frame houses. In 1870 the first post office was established at East Ridge; by 1880 it had evolved into a fullfledged town with a school, store, and two hotels. By 1900 East Ridge had become one of the most populous towns in Pike County with over 2,000 residents. Its growth continued through World War II until its decline following the war's end. Today little remains of East Ridge apart from its rural setting and narrow streets lined with frame homes dating back to the early 1800s. Nonetheless, because of its history and community spirit, East Ridge has been able to recover some of its former glory since 2000 – including becoming home to an annual music festival known as "The Great American Folk Festival."
