In 1819, Major General James Wilkinson of the United States Army was ordered to take possession of the Tennessee Valley for military purposes. After a months' march through rugged terrain, Wilkinson reached Elizabethton on July 8, 1819. He immediately ordered the construction of a small fortification called Fort Donelson. The fort was completed in November and garrisoned by two companies of U.S. Volunteers under Colonel John Sevier and Lieutenant Colonel David Humphreys. On December 12, 1819, Wilkinson conducted an attack against the fortifications at Fort Donelson which resulted in a disastrous defeat for his opponent. The Americans were forced to abandon their positions and retreated back up the Tennessee River towards Chattanooga. This event is generally considered as one of the most significant defeats suffered by American forces during the War of 1812. In 1830, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Elizabethton and began skirmishing with Union forces around town. On May 10, 1830, Forrest's forces attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Donelson which resulted in a fierce battle that lasted all day long. In total, about 100 Union soldiers were killed or wounded in this encounter while Forrest only lost five men himself. This victory ended Confederate efforts to retakeElizabethton from Union control and solidified his command over the town as an enemy stronghold

Elizabethton was founded in 1853 by General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Bledsoe Polk. The community was named after Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The town is located on the banks of the South Fork of the Cumberland River just west of the Kentucky state line. According to the 2007 US Census Bureau report, Elizabethton had a total population of 1,366; 7 percent were under age 18, 9 percent were age 65 or over, and 98 percent were male. The median household income was $60,594; it has a poverty rate (based on family size) of 20%. In 1865 Confederate General William Taney moved his army from Murfreesboro to nearby Gallatin Valley to oppose Union General Ulysses S. Grant's march into Tennessee through that state during the American Civil War. In order to forestall detection by Union forces he ordered his cavalry commander John Pope to cross over from Arkansas and attack Elizabethton from its south side while simultaneously withdrawing all other Confederate forces northward across the river for unknown reasons(Pope's orders are still being studied today). Union troops found no enemy activity taking place when they arrived at about 4:00 pM on October 10th 1865 and decided not to investigate further as there seemed "no immediate danger". However Pope's orders actually called for simultaneous attacks against both sides' positions - this event became known as "the Battle of Elizabethtown". Not long after this battle occurred local residents began receiving letters warning them that their town would be destroyed if they didn't leave quickly because shortly thereafter Confederate general Robert Ewell arrived with an army commanded by Jubal Early in order pursue Pope's retreating Confederates instead of Join Grant's pursuit force which would have resulted in much destruction throughout central Knoxville if caught up with him(Ewell never made it back into Tennessee). Consequently most people chose to stay put since they didn't want any part of what could have been happening around them- many died in what is now known as "the Great Babylon Disaster" due to lack of food and shelter during that time period.(Today only one building remains standing from whenElizabethton had over 100 homes) In 1907 John Fenton established a cotton gin near present day Elizabethton Boulevard in order to increase production for local millsinderies(today’s Walmart store occupies site once occupied by Fenton’s gin). For nearly fifty years Fenton operated his gin without incident until 1989 when fire destroyed most buildings within five miles radius including original distillery buildings which stood adjacent to current day Walmart store propertyfront). On July 12th 1909 two sisters named Nannie Hinton and May Hinton filed a lawsuit praying for declaratory judgment barring license revocation proceedings brought against them by their father-in-law Charles Hinton alleging violations thereof arising outof their marriage on November 15th 1903 (Charles Hinton died prior thereto)). On December 3rd 1909 Charles’ widow petitioned Circuit Court Judge J W Stephenson granting her husband’s request seeking such relief (Nannie & May Hinton were married at St Phillip Episcopal Church located east side Of Main Street near present day intersection Of Elmwood Avenue & Park Road NE). At issue therein was whether C&G Railroad Co., Incorporated owned land bordering Highway 6 within 5 miles radius where coal mine workings existed & whether said coal mine workings constituted “a public road open unto all who might come upon it without privilege” pursuant thereto provided such roadway did not extend into private ground inhabited primarily by employees thereof), resultant in issuance plenary judgment ordering Charles Hoskins Company Corporation Limited Partnership v Nannie & May Hinton et al., re: Coal Mine workings #1) inside/bordering railroad right-of way leased from C&G Railroad Co., Incorporated; 2) coal mine workings situated outside limits aforesaid consisting essentially only of surface derelict mineshafts lying atop abandoned earthfill pits thenceforth unapproachable save wagons & carts drawn over said surface derelict mineshafts; 3)Stay tuned!
