Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga, TN-MS-AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton was founded in 1819 by Scots-Irish immigrants and has been an agricultural community since its founding. Elizabethton is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River near its confluence with the Ohio River. The first permanent settler in what would become Elizabethton was John Campbell who arrived in 1793 from Fife, Scotland. He named his new land "Campbell's Fork" after his father-in-law, Colonel John Campbell of Llanelli (shire). In 1819, following the Treaty of Ghent between Britain and France, Scots-Irish immigrants began moving to what became Hardin County from all over northwestern America for reasons unknown but likely political or religious reasons. Of those who arrived in1819, many had left their homes behind during the Great Famine of Ireland which had struck America that year. Many others were displaced when a surveyor mistaken their land for Cherokee territory; this led to much litigation as neither party could be certain who owned what they saw on their map or surveyed it incorrectly. Settlers soon began arriving by boat downriver to build log cabins and start farming there; later they built deeper wells and developed a irrigation system using creeks and riverside ditches. By 1852 only 400 people lived in Elizabethton while 2200 acres (10 km²) of land were cultivated including fruit trees such as apples and pears grown by slaves imported from Africa before that trade stopped completely around 1830s due to American restrictions on slave trading then known as "the Embargo Act". In 1865 Union General William Trousdale ordered Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's forces retreating through north Georgia into Tennessee made available for him by Ulysses S Grant following Confederate defeat at Franklinville within sight of Patterson Station just south of present day Elizabethton where he established his headquarters east of White Water Creek Bridge on State Route 22 about 5 miles east southeast of downtown Chattanooga proper - one mile westnorthwestof Today's Allendale Mall - effective October 20th 1865 under orders issued by Ulysses S Grant himself concerning operations against Mobile Bay Campaign being conducted concurrently throughout most central Alabama & southeastern Mississippi... Fewer than 10 men remaining unaccounted for despite intense pursuit resulting finally in unconditional surrender at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865 when more than 1000 men total surrounded & hemmed them In compared to almost 2000 men reportedaging Battle HIll leading up thereto... From this point forward property lines started becoming blurred between North & South again creating some degree of ambiguity still existing today about which farmstead belongs where within this once large Cleburne County municipality particularly given recent annexation efforts undertaken by surrounding municipalities Today hardy farmers raising corn/beans/wheat/maize etc., along with several hundred petunias growing wild provide most basic sustenance for local populace although some folks also lease space used for manufacturing or services here& there.... Elizabethton was named after the English wife of General James Robertson, who landed there in 1796. The town was founded in 1802 by a group of settlers led by Colonel John Sevier. In 1830, Elizabethton became the county seat of Knox County. In 1837, it was renamed to Elizabethton, Tennessee after the first lady of that name. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location and many enterprises such as sugar refining and cotton ginning were established there. Many famous people from Elizabethton include Senator Hiram Sibley and Joe Bonamassa. The tornado outbreak of EF3 struck the town on October 16, 1997 killing at least 35 people and causing extensive damage. After the storm, much progress had been made to rebuild including new schools and a new courthouse which opened in 2001.
The first permanent settler in Elizabethton was John Sevier, who arrived in 1797. He built the Sevier Chapel on the east side of town. The town was named after him. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson visited Elizabethton and ordered all roads in the area closed to travelers because he believed they were aiding slavery. Consequently, few people ventured into the small town until after the Civil War. In 1865, Elizabethton became a part of Tennessee when it seceded from the United States. The town's economy shifted to agricultural production during this time as well as post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts. In1912, Elizabethton had a population of just over 100 people and by 1915 it had ballooned to nearly 1,000 residents. During World War II,Elizabethton played an important role in both Nazi Germany and Japan's military campaigns against the United States forces in Southeast Asia. On October 15, 1944, Japanese soldiers began landing at Iwo Jima Island with Operation Neptune's Spear – their largest amphibious assault campaign against American troops since WWII began. Two days later (October 16), Allied forces landed on Iwo Jima and destroyed most of Japan’s airfields; consequently endangering Japanese war strategy and limiting Japanese naval activity within Okinawa Prefecture On December 7th 1941: Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan resulting in America entering World War II On January 3rd 1945 American general Douglas MacArthur surrendered at San Francisco Bay Bridge
