Gun locks have been a part of the Elizabethton, Tennessee community for over 100 years. In 1892, local resident John Sutherlin started manufacturing gun locks at his home. The company continued to produce these locks until 1992. The first gun lock was made by Mr. Sutherlin in 1892 and it consisted of a metal container with an elastic band that prevented unauthorized access to firearms. These early guns lock were not very reliable and were often broken into by criminals. In 1902, the city of Elizabethton installed two new handguns locked storage units in order to prevent theft from these units. This gave the city an opportunity to improve the security of its handguns and also help fund their overall budget. After this event, gun locks became more popular in Elizabethton as they became more effective at preventing thieves from gaining access to firearms. Gun locks continue to be used today and are mainly used for safekeeping firearms within personal households or businesses.

Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton is located on the banks of the Cumberland River and has a humid subtropical climate with average monthly temperatures ranging from 25 to 34 degrees F (11 to 17 degrees C). The area that now makes up Elizabethton was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 18th century. By 1815, most of what would become Elizabethton had been surveyed and laid out as a town by John Sevier, an early settler who also served as postmaster. In 1824, General James Kountze renamed it after his wife, Elizabeth Livingstone Kountze. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Knoxville during the Civil War, he moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Elizabethton and began preparations for an attack on Knoxville. On April 16–17, 1865, while thousands of people were living in fear of Ewell's possible invasion or siege of Knoxville, Elizabethton hosted a patriotic celebration in honor of General Kountze and local Unionists who had helped resist Confederate forces. During Reconstruction following the war, many African Americans came to work in the coal mines and factories aroundElizabethton; however these workers faced discrimination and unfair treatment from their white employers. For much of this time period there remained little political support for black rights within either party in Congress; instead white supremacists looked to use Reconstruction as an opportunity to increase their power within society overall. This situation changed beginning in 1870 when Republican Congressman John Crain opened up new congressional districts across Tennessee that included large numbers of black residents – something which both parties were eager to capitalize on given their newly gained control over government policy. Black residents started coming into contact with each other more formally through mutual aid societies such as The National Association for Colored People (NACP) which had been organized since before Reconstruction even began; ultimately creating a self-sufficient black community that functioned largely without assistance from whites until well into the 20th century. In 1865, the town was destroyed by fire and its population decreased rapidly until the late 1800s when it regained some of its former prominence thanks to its natural resources. Today, Elizabethton is a small community with a few hundred residents that is home to a variety of industries including manufacturing and agriculture.
In 1801, about 1050 residents lived on the site of Elizabethton. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1802 and named their town after Princess Elizabeth of England. In 1810, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a bill establishing a new county seat at Elizabethton, which was eventually chosen by vote. The town became an important center for transportation because it lay on the main road between Nashville and Chattanooga. In addition,Elizabethton played a significant role in the development of Tennessee education system with its well-funded school district. After the American Civil War, Elizabethton experienced heavy population loss as people moved away to find new opportunities in other parts of the country. However, some residents kept their homes and ranching operation until around 1930 when it was destroyed by fire. Today,Elizabethton is known for its traditional cotton farming economy and its status as a bedroom community for Nashville.
