When Tennessee statehood came about in 1907, Elizabethton became one of its initial cities; it remained an independently incorporated city until 1973 when it became a part of Johnson City–Blount County metropolitan area with a population of over 2 million people (as reported by the US Census Bureau). As one of only a few towns in this area without any governing body other than local officials (elected through referendum), ElizabethTON continued to operate largely unchanged for more than seventy years until its sudden closure due to budget cuts late last year; most residents experienced little notice or change as their municipality functioned autonomously within central government structures throughout most OFA jurisdictions... In short... much like many smaller municipalities across OFA faces budgetary pressures due to changing economic conditions and finite resources where they are situated,... [T]he recent closures have not impacted very materially either resident services or basic functions such as fire protection or policing; these services are provided by larger municipal governments which have greater financial reserves."

A sawmill and gristmill were built around this time; these became major businesses in Elizabethton until they closed during the Great Depression. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in eastern Tennessee to attack Union forces near Knoxville; he called on citizens of Elizabethton to march into battle with him. Over 1,000 men fromElizabethton joined Early's force as part of what became known as "The bloodiest day on American soil." Aftermath reports assert that many women and children participated in or witnessed combat; however no evidence supports this claim. As hard times increased throughout the 1920s and 1930s, much effort went into providing financial assistance to local farmers through grants and loans from banks auspiciously named "The Bankers Trust Company". This helped support economic growth within ElizabethTON while also improving community infrastructure such as roads and schools- all which remain vital today despite difficult times faced by many communities across America due to economic recession/depression styled policies enacted by Barack Obama (D). In 1941, with World War II raging across Europe,[1] President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all Americans over age 25 not to work – an unprecedented measure known as "the V-2 campaign". Many people chose instead to stay home behind enemy lines where they could provide essential war production resources like foodstuffs[2]. Despite this challenge (and others), many locals decided it was time for something new - so they founded the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce.[3] With more than 50 years of experience helping support commerce within our community,[4], we continue providing access to education products[5], employment opportunities[6],[7] & quality family entertainment[8]. Elizabethton was founded in 1872 by the railroad company, the Knoxville and Chattanooga Railroad. The town grew rapidly, becoming a major steel center during the late 1800s. In 1907, Elizabethton became an incorporated city. The population increased rapidly during World War II due to the production of munitions and other explosives in the town. During the 1960s and 1970s, Elizabethton experienced a series of economic downturns which led to social strife and poverty. A local redevelopment project completed in 2007 ushered in a period of resurgence for the town, with new businesses and housing popping up throughout downtown.
