Elizabethton was founded in 1814 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a new home after the loss of their previous location, Cumberland County. They named their settlement after Elizabeth, the wife of one of their founders. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 200 people. In 1827, Elizabethton became the county seat of Rutherford County and remained that way until 1907. On July 1, 1907, Elizabethton was annexed by Knoxville.
