Farragut was a whaling and fishing town located in what is now eastern Tennessee. The town was founded by Capt. John Farragut about 1811, and it grew rapidly due to its shipping capabilities and the lucrative catches available from the sea. In 1821, Farragut became the capital ofTennessee after Nashville was moved to the state from Murfreesboro. The town continued to grow, and by 1830 it had become an important commercial center with a population of over 2,000 people. However, during the 1830s recession combined withrising prices for goods brought business crashing down in Farragut. Today, much of what remains ofFarragut is preserved as part ofthe Eastern Tennessee Heritage Trail which runs along portionsofthe former city limits

In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell besieged Nashville and unsuccessfully attacked it before withdrawing southward into Middle Tennessee. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Farragut played an important role as a Union naval officer and commander of the USS "Arkansas" (22nd) Squadron, off Chattanooga. After Chattanooga was captured by Confederate forces on November 9, 1863, Commodore Matthew Perry ordered Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's flagship USS "Sumner" (12th Fleet) to bombard Charleston Harbor; but Porter refused orders to fire on civilian targets because he believed that such actions would incite southern civilians to support the Confederacy. On December 11, 1863, Commodore Porter relieved Admiral Farragut of command of CSS "Tennessee", effective February 2, 1864 – days after Fort Sumter was surrendered by Confederate General Robert Ewell at Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor. On January 3–4 1865, General Sherman's army passed through Memphis from north to south in what is known as The Memphis Campaign; this campaign is considered one of the bloodiest in Ulysses S Grant's presidency because more than 800 people were killed or wounded in three days of fighting around Memphis alone (January 3-5). Aftermath: A plaque commemorating these events can be found at Peabody Museum near downtown Memphis
